Abstract
For sake of convenience the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory (MMPI) is being sent home with patients to complete in an unsupervised setting. This method of administration allows clients to decide when and where to complete an instrument. An added benefit for the clinician is the saving of time otherwise spent in formal, in-clinic testing. In a partially repeated design, 47 clinical out-patients completed the MMPI-2 twice - supervised and unsupervised - with a one week interval between completions. Pearson product-moment correlation between scale scores on the supervised and unsupervised completions were .73 or greater for 12 of the 13 MMPI scales, with the median of all 13 scales being .84. Paired t-tests between the administration revealed no significant differences in mean scale scores. These findings suggest that an unsupervised administration of the MMPI in a take-home fashion can yield results that are reasonably comparable to those obtained in a supervised administration in a clinical setting.
